Back in the late eighteen hundreds when the English aristocracy started keeping tropical fish as pets, the fish tanks where very clumsy tanks with small glass windows made of thick glass. As the hobby took off and became more sophisticated, the tanks started evolving and today there are some truly impressive fish tanks – some as high as 5 stories made entirely of glass – or are they?

While the common perception is that fish tanks are all made of glass, the reality is that glass is no longer the material of choice. Plastic technology has come a long way and acrylic fish tanks are now as common as glass tanks and many people actually prefer acrylic tanks these days.

At first there is very little different between a glass and an acrylic aquarium. They are both transparent and they both offer a good home to your pet fish. When you take a closer look you will start to see that there are some significant differences that you need to look into before you buy a tank.

Glass tanks are heavy and expensive.

The price of glass has sky rocketed and because a fish tank has to use tempered glass its even more expensive. Apart from that, sealing a glass tank is not always a pretty sight as silicone is messy and notorious for collecting algae in a tank. Acrylic tanks actually solve a lot of these problems.

Acrylic is relatively inexpensive and very lightweight. Apart from that it can be formed and shaped very easily and curved aquarium tanks are once again all the craze (bending glass is incredibly expensive). A problem with acrylic however is that its a softer material and can scratch much easier than glass. Its also not as transparent as glass as the light refraction is much better with glass.

All and all, both glass and acrylic offer good options and in the end it boils down to your own personal needs and preferences.

Mexico is a beautiful country filled with a lot of history and there is certainly plenty to see and do with their colonial past and seemingly endless beaches. Mexico is certainly one of the most popular vacation spots in the world. Millions of people every year vacation in various spots all over Mexico.

Besides being the capital of Mexico, Mexico City is a very popular vacation destination. With it’s many museums and almost unbelievable 2,000 acre Chapultepec Park, where Mexico’s largest zoo is located along with plenty of entertainment for both the adults and kids, this is just one of the great spots to visit while vacationing in Mexico City. And if your the party type, there is no shortage of night clubs in Mexico City. And whatever you do, you have to see the floating gardens which have been around for 7 centuries. The history of the floating gardens is very interesting and educational for all.

Cancun, Mexico is another popular vacation destination, with it’s seemingly endless white sandy beaches and top notch resorts. You can take a short bus ride from the resort that your staying in and hit the flee markets where you can get some good quality merchandise at some really good prices. Also, if your up for it, you can take a 2 hour bus ride out to the Ruins. That will be an all day trip, but I highly recommend seeing the Ruins. Cancun is truly one of the best Mexican vacations that you can take.

Conzumel, Mexico is a fun and exciting place to visit as well. Probably best known for it’s diving and snorkeling, there are many other things to do there as well. With all of it’s restaurants, shopping, night life activities and beautiful beaches you won’t have any trouble keeping busy.

These are just a couple of Mexican vacations that are always available. There are many different vacation spots all over Mexico and no matter which spot you pick, you will have a great time. Every vacation destination in Mexico has many different things to do. No matter what your definition of entertainment is, you’ll find it just about anywhere you go in Mexico.

As gathered from Microsoft® Encarta® 2007, an aquarium is defined as:

container for fish: a water-filled transparent container, often box-shaped, in which fish and other water animals and plants are kept.
aquatic zoo: a building in which fish and other water animals are kept and shown to the public.

Both are very simple definitions that hit the mark. But there is more to aquariums than meets the eye.

Historically, the birth of aquariums dates back to the era of the Roman Empire where sea barbels, a toothless kind of European fish with feelers resembling whiskers near the mouth, were kept in small marble containers under guest beds. It was circa year 50 when glass panes came into use and better viewing of the fish was appreciated by replacing one wall with the transparent material.

Over the centuries, that simple amenity evolved with improvisations involving habitation and ecosystem improvement, cleaning and maintenance methods, change of material components, shape and size.

These and more improvements led to the eventual creation of ambitious versions ranging from whole-wall aquarium panels in plush homes and those that are huge enough for public viewing, giving birth to tourist attractions such as the Georgia Aquarium and Monterey Bay Aquarium in the USA, the Lisbon Oceanarium in Portugal and the Sydney Aquarium in Australia.

The Sydney Aquarium which took two years to build is located in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.

It is one of the largest public aquariums in the world and definitely one of the most popular tourist attractions not only for visitors coming from within the country but also from other parts of the globe. The facility boasts of 650 species numbering over 6,000 different fish and other aquatic creatures.

Acrylic glass tunnels through which sharks can be viewed above by spectators and a recreation of the Great Barrier Reef coral setting are key exhibits of the public aquarium. Later additions enhance its being on top of Australia’s tourist attractions.

Sydney Aquarium opened the first Seal Sanctuary in 1991 featuring Australian sea lions and fur seals, Subantarctic fur seals and New Zealand fur seals but was closed to be replaced in 2008 with the Mermaid Lagoon housing the dugongs, “Pig” and “Wuru”, as unique additions. A crocodile exhibit was later added to the zoological garden, along with other notable expansions that made guaranteed tourist attractions including different kinds of sharks and rays housed within the aquatic zoo complex.

Get yourself a package of Sydney Tours and enjoy the Sydney Aquarium with complete abandon. Be like a child again!

Off the east coast of Florida lies one of the most amazing coral reefs. It is called the Islands of the Bahamas. Few visitors looking at the white sand beaches and crystal blue water pause to consider how they came to be. Lying only feet above sea level, they are mostly comprised of raised coral reefs and the sediment that collected on them.

Although people now inhabit the coral-reefs-turned-islands, living coral goes on growing beneath the sea. Amazing tropical under-sea sights are available to visitors to almost any island in the chain. Adding to the intrigue is the presence in several places of sea turtles, schools of friendly dolphins and even migrating whales. It is truly a snorkeling and scuba diving paradise.

Its friendly, English-speaking people, and proximity to the US make the Bahamas an inviting visit. But before you book a flight, here are some tips to make your trip run smoothly.

1. Bring your passport. The Bahamas is an independent country. A US government authorized document is necessary if you wish to return to the US.

2. Pick a good time of year. The sea is gorgeous any time of year, at least when there isn’t a hurricane around. May is often considered an off-peak month when fewer tourists will be crowding the beaches and reefs.

3. Get to know the locals. Bahamians are a gregarious and hardy bunch, well worth knowing. Since few things grow on sandy beaches, they live mainly on imports and food gathered from the sea. Not all of the local dishes are as hard to stomach as Conch, one of their delicacies.

4. Get in the water, but don’t touch. With water so clear you can see the bottom 12 feet down, it is tempting to watch from the boat.

But so many things are better seen under the sea. Most sea creatures, even sharks, are shy and won’t bother you if you don’t bother them.

5. Get travel insurance that covers your activities. Sickness and injury can occur at any time. The Bahamas is well equipped, but should something serious happen, you may need to be evacuated to the US. This is a costly procedure running into thousands of dollars even from a vacation spot as close as the Bahamas. Travel insurance for scuba divers needs to have that activity specifically included. Insurance plans do have sports riders. Make sure you speak with a reputable insurance broker.

With a little planning, you will have many stories to tell when you return from discovering the living coral reefs of the Bahamas.

Anglefish are a stunning freshwater aquarium fish that you can add to your tank. Freshwater angelfish are a type of South American Cichlid. They were first brought into Germany in 1911 and into the US in 1925. A number of kinds have been bred by aquarists, and angelfish have become the most popular freshwater aquarium fish.

However, angelfish are not a resilient fish and they can be aggressive. Many people don’t recognize that angelfish are omnivores and will devour tank mates such as Neon Tetras, which they think of as a fantastic delight. The key is simple. If the fish will fit in the angel’s mouth, it is not a tank mate; it is dinner. They are also attracted to slow moving, pretty, shiny fish with long fins. They are notorious for nipping at the fins of Bettas.

Since the early 1990′s, there has been a marked decline in the robustness of angelfish.

So called “angelfish disease” has been a difficult dilemma for freshwater aquarium enthusiasts. If you have had difficulties with angelfish not surviving in your tank, it is probable that you tank is tainted. Tanks can stay infected for months. If you have lost angelfish, you should consult with a professional and decontaminate your tank.

If you have never owned angelfish or you have had success with angels in your freshwater aquarium and you wish to add new angels, it is very important that you set up an isolation tank and isolate your new angelfish. You do not want to bring in a sick fish into your community.

Angelfish are easily stressed. Angels caught in the wild are given strong antibiotics, which can actually enable them to live around ailing fish and bring the sickness they have been contaminated with into your tank.

This is another reason an isolation tank for your angelfish is necessary.

Procuring your angelfish from an respectable breeder will also help you to obtain a hardy fish. Tank-raised angelfish are less stressed than wild-caught angelfish because they are used to an aquarium environment. They will be stressed from being moved, but they will not have the additional stress from being caught in the wild, transported from South America and then placed into a tank environment.

Angelfish need to be kept in water with a pH range of 6.0 to 8.0, a dH range of 5.0 ñ 13 and water temperature in the low to mid 80′s F. They like thick vegetation and room to swim. A 40-gallon tank is pretty much the minimum if it is a community tank; a 60-gallon is better. Not only do the angels need opportunity to swim, but their tank mates need places to get away when the angels become aggressive.

Since angelfish are omnivores, they need to be fed live food as well as flakes. Baby brine shrimp are easy to raise, and provide a needed treat for angels. Another excellent choice are bloodworms.

Angelfish do not do well in isolation. Having a single angelfish in a community tank is a set up for problems. Angelfish have been known in such a situation to kill ALL their fellow fish in the tank. Angels seem happiest with six or more in a community and lots of room.

If you are planning to build your first saltwater aquarium, you may wonder why on earth the prospective inhabitants of your underwater world would demand the services of a Buddy Holly impersonator to make their lives more comfortable. But don’t panic, we’re not talking about that sort of live rock. Live rock is not exactly what it says on the tin as the rock itself is dead, formed from the remains of coral reefs that have been damaged by storms and hurricanes. The life it harbours is the important part; it’s a habitat for algae, marine worms, small crabs and other crustaceans. These creatures are hugely beneficial in a salt-water aquarium, recreating the real-world eco system that your fish would live in.

In short, live rock acts as a bio-filter for your tank. The creatures that it provides a home too process waste food and faeces. Because of its nature live rock has a large surface area, larger in many cases than traditional filters. Apart from its benefits as a filtering method, the rock can be used as a structure to form an attractive landscape; live corals can be attached, either by marine glue, or by carefully rooting it into crevices. Live rock and its inhabitants will also supply a source of food, hiding spaces and create a truly natural environment. Managed correctly many enthusiasts find live rock and its miniscule inhabitants as fascinating as the other inhabitants of the tank.

There are two types of live rock usually available on the market – cured and un-cured. The latter is cheaper but has the disadvantage that you will have to cure it yourself. This is a messy, smelly, time consuming process that can require a large amount of space. In short buying un-cured rock may be cheaper, but in terms of time and effort the cost of cured is outweighed by the inconvenience of curing yourself. Cured rock should be considered a worthwhile investment, especially if you are setting up your first saltwater environment.

The curing process involves keeping the rock in high circulation tanks under a fine spray of salt water. The rock is scrubbed off periodically to remove dead and dying organisms. This process should be undertaken over a period of several weeks, look for suppliers who cure their rock for at least four weeks. During the shipping process further organisms will die off. This is perfectly normal and you will need to cure the rock for a short period yourself if you are using it in an established tank. This process is simple and involves keeping the rock in separate containers periodically scrubbing off dead organisms. The process ensures that when you introduce the rock into your aquarium there will not be a sudden increase in ammonium. For advice on the process speak to your supplier, who will be happy to give you detailed information.

The sources of live rock are usually self-explanatory. Stockists will have various types of rock, Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf being a few of the brands. Reputable stockists will supply only rock that has been collected safely and correctly and is not therefore causing damage to the eco-systems from which it comes. A popular sustainable source for good quality live rock are the Fijian Islands, this type of Pacific rock is widely available. The collection and export of live rock is monitored by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). This body periodically restricts or limits the collection of rock, so ensuring that your supplier is sourcing rock from areas that CITES allow is the best way to ensure that the rock you are buying is legitimate.

Whether you have an established aquarium or are starting a new tank, live rock will be an attractive and authentic addition creating a beautiful and realistic habitat for your aquatic friends.

The scuba diving wetsuit is largely determined by the individual needs and desires of the scuba diver, whether he or she is new to the diving fraternity or a seasoned veteran. One of the first and foremost issues that need consideration is the conditions in which the diver will be using the scuba diving wetsuit. The conditions will naturally determine the desired thickness, and related functionality of the new purchase.

Many people mistakenly believe that diving in so called warm water conditions, does not necessarily facilitate the need for a scuba diving wetsuit, because they believe that you warm water will not lead to the loss of any body heat.

This is in fact incorrect, due to the fact that the water in which we swim or dive actually acts as a conductor of heat away from the body.

Due to the advancement of technology of the wetsuit has become somewhat of a technological marvel, incorporating the latest developments in both materials and technology, which provides a better fitting and functional wetsuit. In understanding the function of a wetsuit, you will be well equipped to making an informed decision on your desired purchase.

In layperson’s terms, the wetsuit offers a layer of protection around the body, which in turn prevents the loss of body heat to the surrounding water. This has the benefit of allowing you to dive longer, and depending on which suit you use can also aid in diving in colder water conditions. One of the main points in selecting a scuba diving wetsuit, is that of selecting the right size and fit; which should be relatively tight, but not too tight that it becomes uncomfortable.

The fact that the scuba diving wetsuit must be tight is in order to prevent as much water entering the suit as possible. This is because the neoprene rubber, that the suit is made out of, essentially traps the layer of water that is heated by the body, which forms the mentioned layer of protection from the cold. Any water that enters the wetsuit will therefore defeat the object of that layer of protection.

The thickness of the scuba diving wetsuit is extremely relevant to the conditions that you will be diving in. The colder the water conditions the thicker the suit, assuming you will predominantly be diving in these conditions then such a suit would be recommended. However if you will be mostly frequenting warm water conditions, then a thinner suit would be advisable. There is a large range of thicknesses and sizes available in terms of the selection of a scuba diving wetsuit.

Before rushing into the purchase of a suit, make sure you understand the exact functionality will require in terms of the thickness and size so that you may enjoy the full use of the purchase of your new scuba diving wetsuit.

If you have an aquarium in your house or office you can relax by watching them. Collecting fish is considered the second largest hobby in the world. Throughout the world, there are nearly 25,000 species of fish. One best thing about fish is there is a large assortment of shapes, sizes and colors.

Why do people consider fish as pets?

Inexpensive to keep

Inexpensive to feed

Keeps the environment clean

Requires less space when compared to other pets

Selecting fish for your Aquarium

Deciding the right kind of fish for your aquarium is very difficult. But if you read about the varieties of aquarium fish and their characteristics you will be able to make the right purchase. Before buying a fish it is important that you keep your aquarium ready.

While setting up your aquarium do decide whether you want house tropical fish or cold water fish. Both species require warm or cold temperatures to live in. Some fishes are so fragile that a temperature drop of a few degrees will kill them. Always choose fish that are hardy and require same environmental condition. Make sure that the fish you choose for your tank are all compatible with each other.
Once you have decided as to whether your aquarium should have a heater or not, decide on the fish. You can find different kinds of tropical fish in the market. Although they need a heater, they are considered more colorful than cold water fish.
Beginners should buy fresh water fish than marine fish. Fresh water fish are easier to manage than marine fish. You can either buy guppies, mollies, angel fish etc. White cold mountain fish are considered more colorful. Freshwater fish require heater.
Among marine aquarium fish species, damsel fish, clown fish etc are best for beginners where as dragonets and lionfish should be kept only by experienced. Avoid sharks and batfishes.

Setting up your aquarium

Basic things to remember before setting up your aquarium
Keep your aquarium ready before buying fish because they need a ready environment

Decide on the size of aquarium. For beginners, a 10 or 20 gallon may be ideal.

Aquariums are made up of glass or acrylic. Before buying an aquarium look for scratches or cracks.

Filter is required to keep the water clean. Different types of filters are under gravel filters, box filters and outside filters.

Heater if you plan to keep tropical fish.

Decide on the type of decoration. Type of gravel, type of plants and other decorations like natural rock, driftwood and so on.

Temperature should also be given utmost importance.

Types of fish

There are four types of fish that you can keep in the home aquarium:
Tropical fish: These types of fishes live in salt or freshwater but needs a warm temperature to live.
Coldwater fish: These can live in salt or fresh water but needs cold water temperature.
Marine fish: This type of fish lives in salty seawater. Marine fishes need tropical climate.
Freshwater fish: This type of fishes require heater. You can find them in inland rivers and streams. They generally require less care.

Diet

There are various kinds of foods available for saltwater and freshwater fish.
There are two types of foods which fishes like to eat:
Live foods – These consists of plants, animals and micro-organisms. They are better than processed food because they contain protein.

Processed foods – These consists of fresh, frozen, freeze-dried and canned foods. Fresh foods can be small bits of meats, vegetables and fruits. Canned foods provide a balanced diet. Frozen diet can be shrimp or bloodworms as they provide a good source of digestive protein.

Fish care tips

· Clean your water two times in a week
· Turn off your heater before changing water.
· Avoid overfeeding your fish
· Buy fishes that can suit your water conditions.
· Buy those types of fishes that can fit your tank.

An alternative method of diving, though, known as nitrox diving, can allow divers more underwater time. While nitrox diving is attracting a growing number of supporters, it’s important for divers to learn the basic safety rules before attempting it.

Nitrox diving takes its name from the combination of the words “oxygen” and “nitrogen.” This is appropriate, as nitrox is a special combination of nitrogen and oxygen that allows divers to spend more time under the water and less time on the surface. As a matter of fact, the air you are breathing right now is about 21% oxygen, 79% nitrogen.

Of course, divers usually rely on a combination of nitrogen and oxygen when diving. But in nitrox diving, the two gases are mixed in a very specific way.

In regular SCUBA diving, the goal is to mix the gases in a way that mimics the air found on the surface of the earth. In nitrox diving, the mixture is changed. The new nitrox air is supposed to allow divers to maximize the amount of time they actually spend under the water.

It is also designed to reduce the amount of time divers have to spend on the surface before diving back under the water. Normally divers use the decompression tables and a dive computer to figure out how long to stay down- there are also specially designed nitrox dive computers available as well.

Nitrox mixes, come in a variety of ratios, are typically considered either hypoxic or hyperoxic. Hypoxic nitrox mixes contain less than 21 percent oxygen, while hyperoxic mixes contain more than 21 percent. Divers who dive for recreational or sporting purposes, are only allowed to use hyperoxic nitrox mixes. Because divers using nitrox mixes will have a greater amount of oxygen and a lesser level of nitrogen in the air they are breathing in, they can spend more time underwater. They also have to make fewer decompression stops and spend less time on the surface waiting for the chance to dive again.

There are some safety issues that nitrox divers need to be aware of before diving. For instance, those who dive with the wrong nitrox mix may suffer serious complications as they swim deeper under the surface. Certain combinations of oxygen and nitrogen do not work well at some depths. There is also the misconception among some divers that nitrox diving allows them to dive deeper under the surface. This, though, is not true. The more oxygen there is in an air mix, the shallower a diver’s dives will have to become. Nitrox allows divers to stay underwater longer. It doesn’t allow them to dive deeper into it. A good air integrated dive computer can assist with computation of safe ascents when nitrox diving.

As a result, human activities cause different types of environmental pollution.

First, land pollution:
The clean-up of the garbage has become an important issue in many big cities. Among the million tons of garbage every day, most can not be incinerated or decayed, such as plastics, rubber and glass, which are considered as the number one enemy of mankind.

Second, marine pollution:
This is mainly caused by the crude oil leaked from oil tanker and oil well, the pesticides and fertilizers used in agriculture, the sewage discharged from factories, and the acid solution exhausted from oil field. These wastes make most of the oceans and lakes polluted. As a result, not only the marine organisms are affected, but both the birds and humans may also be poisoned because of eating these organisms.

Third, offgas pollution:
This is the most direct and serious environmental pollution, mainly from the carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide emitted from factories, cars, power plants, and so on. Every day, there are many people infected with respiratory organ or visual organ diseases due to the exposure to these polluted air.

Fourth, water pollution:
Water pollution happens when certain substance enters into the water and changes the chemical, physical, biological characteristics of the water, which then affects the efficient use of water, endangers human health, causes harm on the environment, and leads to the deterioration of water quality.

Fifth, air pollution:
Air pollution means that the concentration of pollutants in the air reaches to or above the hazardous level, which leads to the damage to ecosystems and the normal survival and development of human life. As a result, it will bring harms both on human being and creatures.

Sixth, noise pollution:
Noise pollution is the phenomenon when the environmental noise exceeds the national emission standards of environmental noise, and interferences with the normal work, study, and living of other people.

What’s more, radioactive pollution is also a serious problem in modern society. In order to eliminate various kinds of environmental pollution, many proactive measures have been taken across the country. For example, nowadays many cars begin to use ethanol gasoline instead of the traditional gasoline, which is very beneficial to solve the problem of air pollution.
